Sauna Size Guide: 1, 2, 3, or 4-Person? Honest Recommendations

1-person, 2-person, 3-person, or 4-person? The right answer is rarely the largest one you can afford. Here is how to think about sizing without buying more than you need.

Start with the realistic question

Manufacturers print the maximum number of people who can squeeze into the cabin. That is rarely the actual usage pattern. Ask yourself instead: how many people will share a sauna session at once on a typical week?

Most home saunas are used solo (one person) or as a couple (two people) for daily routine. Family or group sessions happen on weekends or for guests — less often than buyers expect.

Size-by-size honest breakdown

1-person

Tight cabin, single person sitting upright. Cabin footprint typically 32 by 36 inches.

  • Best for: apartments, condos, small home offices, dedicated daily users
  • Not for: couples wanting to share, families, large guests over 6 ft 4
  • Pros: compact, fast heat-up (10 to 12 minutes), lowest energy use, fits where 2-person will not
  • Cons: cannot share a session, smaller resale market

2-person

Most popular size in the Cyvor lineup. Two people sitting upright, or one person reclined diagonally. Cabin footprint typically 47 by 36 inches.

  • Best for: couples, single users who want to occasionally share, average homes with a basement or large closet
  • Not for: families of 3+, or anyone who wants to lie fully flat on a bench
  • Pros: realistic for daily couple-use, manageable footprint, still 110V infrared on most models
  • Cons: 4 ft of bench feels tight if both occupants are over 6 ft

3-person

Genuinely fits 2 to 3 adults; or 1 person fully reclined. Cabin footprint typically 59 by 36 inches.

  • Best for: couples who occasionally invite a third, families with one or two teens, taller users who want bench length to lie down
  • Not for: typical single-user routine (you are paying for capacity you will not use)
  • Pros: bench long enough to lie down, comfortable for 2 with room, still 110V on infrared models
  • Cons: 30% more energy use than 2-person, 5 to 8 minute slower heat-up

4-person

Family-size cabin. Two facing benches, room for 4 adults. Cabin footprint typically 60 by 60 inches or 71 by 47.

  • Best for: households with 3+ regular users, social entertaining, lake houses, weekend retreats
  • Not for: daily 1 or 2-person use (heating an empty 4-person is wasteful)
  • Pros: social experience, longer bench room, two-tier bench in some models for variable heat exposure
  • Cons: usually requires 240V and a dedicated room; double the daily energy cost of a 2-person

The "buy bigger" trap

Common buyer regret: "I bought the 4-person thinking we would have friends over weekly. We use it solo six nights out of seven. Should have gotten the 2-person and saved $1,500."

This is the single most common post-purchase regret we see. Buyers anticipate a future of group sessions that rarely materializes. Daily real-life sauna use is solo or with one partner. Size for that, not the dream party scenario.

Choosing by household

Household Recommended size Why
Single, apartment 1-person infrared Compact, plug-and-play 110V, daily use sized correctly
Single, house with space 2-person infrared Room to recline, occasional share with friend
Couple, condo 2-person infrared Both can use simultaneously, fits typical condo space
Couple, house 2 or 3-person Bigger if you want to lie down; 2-person if footprint matters
Family of 3+ 3 or 4-person Real shared family use; pick 4 for outdoor or basement only
Social entertainer 4-person traditional The classic Finnish format scales to groups; 240V required
Lake house / second home 3 or 4-person outdoor Group use, weather-rated for outdoor, weekend ritual

Energy and time scaling

Size Heat-up time (infrared) Energy cost / session
1-person 10–12 min $0.08–$0.12
2-person 12–15 min $0.12–$0.18
3-person 15–20 min $0.16–$0.22
4-person 18–25 min $0.20–$0.30

The honest recommendation

If you are in doubt and you have the space, the 2 or 3-person infrared is the sweet spot for the largest share of buyers. Comfortable for the most realistic use case (1 to 2 people), affordable to run, fits in the largest range of homes. Going bigger is great if your usage actually justifies it — just be honest about what that usage will be.
